Connectedly strengthens community support networks, reduces social isolation, and improves the well-being of older adults, especially women and their families.

High rates of older Philadelphians are at risk of social isolation. Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are most prevalent in people who live alone. In Philadelphia, nearly 40% of adults age 65+ live alone, and 48% of low-income elders live alone.

Social isolation poses a major health risk. Loneliness and social isolation have a profound impact on mental and physical health- increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, heart disease, stroke, and dementia.

The risk of premature death from social isolation is comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and greater than obesity and physical inactivity.

We must prioritize building social connection the same way we have prioritized other critical public health issues such as tobacco, obesity, and substance use disorders.
